Chapter 21

Time passed, and on the day of the year’s first snowfall, Sophie was sentenced to six years in prison by the courts for attempted murder and other crimes.
Noel was dead drunk when the news reached him, but he did not care.
He had been living life in a drunken stupor for the past six months and was rarely sober.
No one could talk him out of it. Every time he got drunk, he would call out for Stella.
His buddies could only stand by side and watch as no one dared to contact Stella.
To be more precise, no one dared to offend Eric.
The media had caught pictures of Eric and Stella honeymooning overseas several times. They looked like happy newlyweds with a close relationship.
Eric returned with Stella from the honeymoon on New Year’s Eve.
During the Chiltons‘ New Year dinner, Eric made an announcement with a happy look on his face.
“Stella is pregnant. The doctor says it’s twins.”
As everyone congratulated them, Noel made a gaffe and broke his glass.
Everyone turned to look at him. He turned pale as he used every ounce of energy in him to congratulate them through his teeth.
Every second was torture to him.
After ten minutes, Noel made an excuse and hurriedly left the dinner.
He could not sleep that night. He did not drink but sat in a corner to reminisce.
His room lit bright from the glow of his lamp. He stared at the cupboard filled with things Stella gave him.
When she was ten, she folded ninety–nine origami stars and put them in a bottle for him. When she turned sixteen, she used more than half a month to assemble a model toy for him. At twenty, she designed a brooch and a pair of cufflinks for him.
Noel’s eyes turned red as he looked at them.
He felt pain all over his body. His heart felt like it was being clenched tight by a pair of hands. He could hardly breathe.

Noel covered his face with his hand. His tears fell through his fingers and wet his sleeves.
That was when he suddenly understood.
He knew what it felt like to lose something, only to realize too late that he cherished it.
Even though Stella was only three months pregnant, Eric was already thinking about names.
He put together more than ten names of girls and boys and showed them to Stella, along with their potential nicknames.
Stella put the childcare book in her hands down and glanced at the list. She was immediately attracted by a name.
She picked up the paper, and tears welled in her eyes when she saw the name ‘Aisling‘.
“How did you come up with this name?”
Even though Eric had no idea why Stella looked so sad, he immediately pulled her into his arms to comfort her gently.
“Isn’t this a nice name? We can use another name if you don’t like it.”
Eric proceeded to remove the name from the list.
Stella stopped him and pressed the paper to her heart. She smiled as she teared up.
“No. Let’s use this name. We’ll definitely have a daughter. Let’s call her Aisling.”
Stella said this with a lot of conviction. Eric wiped away her tears and passed her another piece of paper.
“Alright. How about naming the other child Aurora?”
Stella felt something off when she heard this.
Aisling was her daughter’s name from her last life. Old Mr. Chilton had given her the name.
When Eric named their children, Stella realized that Eric might have been the one who named Aisling back then.
She remembered that after she had recovered from giving birth, she went to the old mansion to see Old Mr. Chilton with her daughter. Eric happened to have returned to the country back then.
They bumped into each other at the door. She greeted him and was about to leave when he unexpectedly called out to her.

“What are you doing back alone with your daughter? Where is he?”
Noel was still drinking his sorrows away from the news of Sophie’s marriage. Stella would go ten days or even half a month without seeing him.
This pained her, but she covered up for him.
“He’s been busy. I didn’t want to bother him at work, so I came back alone.”
Stella still remembered the look Eric gave her after so many years.
His eyes were dark and unfathomable. There was even a trace of pain.
She did not understand it then.
Now that she remembered it, she felt mixed emotions about it.
Stella was stubborn enough to march through her miserable life alone in her past life while Eric kept his secret hidden deep inside his heart.
They missed out on each other for years because of this.
