“I… brought you a small cake.”
I handed Ethan the cake and went to play with the puppy on the sofa.
My first dog was a birthday gift from my parents with my brother helping pick out.
Back then, I never knew what troubles were.
That’s why I always felt that when I saw a puppy, all my worries disappeared.
Looking up, I realized I wasn’t the only one in a good mood.
Ethan sat beside me, lips slightly curved.

Quietly eating the small cake, one bite at a time.
“Little sister, you’ve got cream on you.”
I stood up to grab a tissue, when suddenly I realized…
I’d been too relaxed and called him by the wrong name.
“LITTLE SISTER?”
Ethan’s voice came closer.
His breath too.
Too close–the puppy yelped and ran away.
I looked up slightly and found myself facing his handsome features.
And under my hand, the firm muscles of his chest.
My ears suddenly filled with my heartbeat.

My heart was beating so fast it might explode.
My face burned so hot that my mind was growing dizzy.
But he kissed me again.
This time very gently, very tenderly.
His voice deep and husky:
“When should we register our marriage?”
“Today, or tomorrow?“>
I don’t know what came over me.
Dizzy from his kisses, and thinking it was already evening…
Why not tomorrow then?
The next day, Ethan really took me to city hall.
An elderly gentleman, apparently the Mayor of Paris, spoke at length while I nodded along.
With a flourish, he issued our marriage certificate.
I felt nervous, but mostly quietly excited.
Those with similar struggles understand each other.
I always felt that Ethan wouldn’t be the wrong choice.
The only unpleasant thing was Ryan somehow tracking down my Paris phone number.
He called me using a French number.

“I knew it! You really are in Paris!”
As soon as the call connected, he recognized my voice.
“Sophie, learned to throw tantrums, have you?”
“It’s been three months. Haven’t you had enough?”
I took a deep breath to suppress my emotions:
“Ryan, stop disrupting my life.”
“Your life? What kind of life could you possibly have?!”
“Don’t think I don’t know–you went to Paris to find that ‘Angel‘, didn’t you?”
“A little girl who eats candy all day? You’re going to burden her and you have the nerve?”
I never hide anything from Ryan–what I did, who my friends were.
“That’s… none of your business anymore.”
“I’M YOUR FUCKING HUSBAND! HOW IS IT NONE OF MY BUSINESS?!”
“I suggest you get your ass back here right now! Otherwise…”
I hung up directly.
He sent another text:
[Not coming back? Fine! Good for you!]
[Go ahead and cling to your little sister for the rest of your life!]
I never realized Ryan could be such a horrible person.
But thinking about it again…

He could cheat during our marriage and brazenly ask me for a “FAKE” divorce.
What kind of good person would he be?
I’d been blinded by childhood attachment, confused in the head.
That evening, many friends sent me messages,
Most included a screenshot of Ryan’s Facebook post with a message:

Ryan had posted an intimate photo with Lily–officially acknowledging their relationship.
I couldn’t be bothered explaining so much, simply posted a photo of our divorce certificate.
My college roommate group chat exploded.
“Holy shit! Sophie, you finally woke up!”
I always thought there was something off about that Brown guy. He never took you to
meet his friends, and he never posted about you!”
“Exactly, and he always brought up Sophie’s ‘selective mutism‘. Sophie talked fine with us until he mentioned it, then she’d actually get too nervous to speak.”
Apparently, the signs had been there all along.
A few days later, the group exploded again.
“Is he mentally ill?”
Ryan had sent them all the same message.
A photo of a diamond ring.
A screenshot of his chat with Lily:
[Three days from now, I have a surprise for you.]

[Are you free?]
Then a message to be relayed to me:
“Tell Sophie that in three days, it’s my mother’s birthday celebration.”
“If she doesn’t come back to the country, I’ll give my mother a new daughter–in–law!”
I thought he was mentally ill too.
“Just ignore him.”
But I was indeed returning to the country.
That night when Ethan came home, he brought two suitcases.
“We’re going back to America for a bit.”
I was taken aback.
“The marriage certificate needs to be validated back home,” he explained, sorting through documents. “Plus, I want to introduce you to friends and family.”
“I…”
I instinctively wanted to ask: Can I… really?
As my roommate said, Ryan never took me to public events.
He was afraid I wouldn’t be able to speak and I would stutter–Embarrassing.
“Sophie.” Ethan suddenly stopped what he was doing.
He turned around.
Cupping my face with one hand, his black pupils fixed on mine:
“Sophie Wells, there’s nothing you cannot do.”
A warm tingling sensation spread from my heart throughout my body.
