“Sorry to have disturbed you,” Ethan said, dropping the napkin and taking my hand as we

It wasn’t until we reached the elevator that my heartbeat seemed to normalize.
My legs felt weak. As I was about to fall, Ethan caught me by the waist, pressing me against
the wall.
“You went to all this trouble,” I breathed heavily, “just to stop Ryan from bothering me again?”
Ethan cupped my face,
“You look beautiful today,”
I wasn’t sure if he meant my appearance or my words,
He leaned in and kissed me.
“Sophie, Sophie!” Ryan was calling from outside the elevator,
Unfortunately, while talking, we hadn’t pressed any floor buttons,
The elevator opened for him.
Ethan pulled me tightly against his chest, coldly looking back:
“What’s up?”
The elevator wall reflected my kiss flushed face, and outside, Ryan’s stunned, nearly desperate expression.
I hurriedly pressed the basement button.
Before the doors closed, Ethan, rather wickedly, tilted my chin up and, right in front of Ryan.

The temperature under the covers rose,

My heartbeat thundered, drowning out my voice,
But I thought of the puppy sleeping at the foot of our bed.
When we returned, Ethan badn’t forgotten to bring it along.
I thought of the lavender–colored bedding in our room, of the tulips filling our garden
